Every Lesson, Every Day
We want to ensure that all of our pupils receive high-quality lessons every day and that they have consistency from our teachers as they move between different areas of the curriculum. Research shows that learning is improved when pupils are able to make connections between what they already know and the new content being taught. We have developed a lesson model that focuses on sharing the learning objectives with the pupils and linking lessons to prior learning. Through expert exposition and modelling, engaging pupils in deliberately selected teaching activities, we support pupils in applying their learning, retrieving knowledge and practicing skills to enable them to become independent learners. At Oak Wood School we call this ‘Every Lesson Every Day’.
Ready to Learn
Engaging in the learning process isn’t just about what happens in lessons. At Oak Wood School we believe in preparing our pupils for the world of work by expecting them to take responsibility for themselves. We expect all pupils to arrive to lessons on time, with the correct equipment, to be fully prepared and ‘Ready to Learn’. This includes the expectation that they also take ownership of their learning time outside of school and maximise the many opportunities we offer.

At Oak Wood School, we believe in developing a strong foundation in literacy. Our approach focuses on developing the essential keys for learning — reading, writing, speaking, and listening — which are at the heart of effective communication. We nurture students’ vocabulary and comprehension skills to ensure they can understand, express, and connect ideas with confidence. Through engaging lessons and interactive activities, Oak Wood School fosters a learning environment where every child becomes an articulate communicator and a thoughtful learner, prepared to thrive in all areas of literacy.
Keys for Learning - Numeracy
At Oak Wood School, we believe that every child can grow in confidence and skill when it comes to numeracy. Our approach focuses on developing fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving—the essential keys for learning in mathematics. Students build conceptual understanding by exploring ideas deeply and making connections between concepts. Through conjecturing and application, they learn to think critically, test their ideas, and apply their knowledge in real-life situations. By combining these elements, we help our learners not only understand numbers but also enjoy the process of discovering how mathematics shapes the world around them.
